Science projects were easy in primary school. Then, you can submit a model rocket, an egg sucked in a bottle or a simple science report on electricity. It is different in middle school. Middle school science teachers want creative ideas, specific elements, in-depth research, and detailed logs of the entire science fair process.

Finding a middle school science project that meets all these criteria has always been a challenge for our family. Our teachers wanted an experiment-based, investigative project for the science fair.
There are five different types of science projects, but most of the library books had projects that were actually demonstrations or models.
It is very important that you read the instructions of your teacher and/or science fair, and make sure that the project your child chooses falls into the right category – especially in middle school.
Here are the five types of projects.
1. Investigative projects – Most science fairs require students to submit an investigative science project. This type of project consists of an experiment that tests a hypothesis. The experiment will follow the scientific method, and a control group may be required. (If you are unfamiliar with this terminology, see the free resources below!)
An example of an investigative project would be "How does salt affect the boiling point of water?" It can be easily tested by our experiment which adds different amounts of salt to the water and records the temperature at which it boils.
2. Demonstration Projects – In this type of project a student demonstrates a scientific theory, and for a long time the teacher wants it to be presented to the class in the form of an oral report. No real experiment has been done because there will not be one control or different variables.
3. Research projects – Fundamentally this is really a science record. Students research a subject and write exactly what they found. Any sort of science issue may be used to get a study project.
4. Models – To get a model job, models are constructed to describe a scientific principle or construction.
5. Collections – During this kind of project a selection of items is shown to provide an overview of a subject. A good example is a stone set or a screen showing images of various animals in a particular household.
